JOS NORTH LGC FROWNS AT WATER VENDORS IN THE HABIT OF EXTORTION

JOS NORTH LGC FROWNS AT WATER VENDORS WHO SELL WATER ABOVE FOUR HUNDRED PER CART AND SACHET WATER ABOVE  TEN NAIRA

The Local Administration in Jos North  says it will go  hard on any retailer who sells sachet water purpularly known as "pure water" above ten naira in the locality.

The Council has also asked water cart  vendors to henceforth desist from selling water above four hundred naira to consumers while boreholes owners are to release water to the retailers not above one hundred naira.

This came to light during an engagement between the Executive Chairman of Jos North Local Government Council Shehu Bala Usman and the Association of Table Water Producers, Commercial, Borehole owners as well as officials of Water Carts retailers Association held at the conference Hall of Jos North Local Government Council.

Following the outcry of the inhabitants of Jos North  over  inadequate water supply due to the ongoing construction at the  British -  American  flyover interchange, water shortage has  brought untold hardship to  inhabitants of the locality.

The Executive Chairman of Jos North  Shehu Bala Usman therefore deemed it necessary to summon officials of commercial water supply and water Producers to find a way to reduce the hardship confronting citizens.

Shehu Bala Usman noted that  water is life, and  reminded them that they are  offering humanitarian services, stressing that the business demands alot of sacrifice.

The Chairman  decried the excessive profit of almost 100%  being made by retailers who buy a bag of sachet water at  one hundred and fifty naira.

He said his administration would constitute a Committee to clamp down on water retailers, borehole owners and cart  pushers who violate his directive.

Speaking earlier, the Association of Table Water Producers Plateau State (ATWAP) through Vincent Nwokedi told the Chairman that his group  in Jos North after careful consideration of the plight of citizens in the locality sells a bag of water at One Hundred and Fifty Naira in Jos North while Two Hundred Naira per bag  in Jos South.

The commercial borehole owners noted that they sell water to the cart  pushers at fifty naira per truck while in some places one hundred naira only and but they in turn sell to primary consumers at between Seven to eight hundred naira.

The  Chairman and  the private commercial water entrepreneurs resolved that a packet of sachet water in the market should go for ten naira instead of the twenty naira as currently sold  and  borehole owners not  to charge above one hundred naira as well as the price of water per cart  should not be more than four hundred naira.
