As part of activities to commemorate the 2021 World Cancer Day,a Non-Governmental Organization known as Right Culture Initiative staged an awareness program in Miango district, Bassa LGA of Plateau State.
The team leader of the organization,Miss Ruth Sunday Ki told newsmen that the rationale behind the program was to enlighten the rural women on the symptoms and prevention of cancer and also ensure that their welfare and wellbeing are well taken care of.
"One of our mandates as an organization is to see to the welfare of girls and women in terms of their health. We felt it is important to enlighten women about the basic symptoms of breast and cervical cancer in order to prevent them from this deadly disease" She said
Mr Stanley Mani, one of the team members spoke on why every fourth February of every year is set aside to commemorate World Cancer.He shared the significance and relevance of the day to the participants and the world as a whole.
Dr.Makan Naareng of Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH) who sensitized the women on cancer dwelled on cervical and breast types because according to her, they are the most prominent and prevalent.Her focus was on what cancer is,risk factors, causes, symptoms and prevention.She charged the participants to always go for medical check-up or test whenever they feel any sign of cancer. "From Miango to JUTH is not too far so, it's advisable to go there or any other hospital and get tested" She said.
A survivor narrated how she combated cancer and urge fellow women not to be despaired on hearing the disease cancer as it is not a death sentence.
The participants were given the opportunity to ask questions which were all attended to by the medical personnel.
The also expressed their appreciation to the organization and urge them to sustain the program so as they can continue benefiting.
Goodwill messages came through community leaders, women, religious and the district head of Miango,HRH Daniel Chega.
Over 250 women drawn from different communities of Miango district participated in the program.
The event was well attended by the wife of Transition Committee Chairman of Jos South LGC,Mrs.Patience Choji and host of other distinguished personalities.
The event climax with the sharing of sanitary pads by the NGO to the young ladies who also participated to get equipped with the knowledge of Cancer.
