Unity in the Highlands: Governor Mutfwang's Strategic Shift Reshapes Plateau State's Political Landscape

 By Justin Jattim

Jos, Plateau State Nigeria - In a dramatic move that has sent shockwaves across Nigeria's political landscape, Plateau State Governor, Barrister Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, has joined the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), marking a significant realignment of the state's power structure and bolstering the party's prospects ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The high-profile ceremony, held in Jos on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, was attended by top national leaders, including Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima, who represented President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The event was a testament to the growing influence of the APC in the North Central region, with Governor Mutfwang's defection seen as a major coup for the party.

In a statement, Governor Mutfwang described his decision as a strategic move aimed at securing peace, unity, and accelerated development for Plateau State. "We are not defecting; we are realigning, re-engineering, and strategically positioning Plateau State to reap the dividends of democracy," he said, pledging total political support for President Tinubu's re-election bid.

Vice President Shettima hailed Governor Mutfwang as a bridge-builder committed to dialogue and inclusive governance, announcing several federal interventions for the state, including the recruitment of 1,000 youths as forest guards and livestock development projects. "Plateau reminds us that what powers every nation is unity - unity rooted in shared purpose," Shettima said, recalling the role played by Plateau leaders in national reconciliation and consensus-building.

APC National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda, declared that Governor Mutfwang's defection had effectively dismantled opposition parties in the state, adding that the party would work together to ensure Plateau State's development. "With this convergence, the APC is stronger, more united, and more prepared. Plateau State has entered a new political phase defined by unity and purpose," he said.

The event was seen as a major boost to the APC's electoral fortunes in Plateau State, with party leaders assuring that the state would deliver strong support for President Tinubu in 2027. As the country gears up for the next general elections, Governor Mutfwang's defection is likely to have far-reaching implications for Nigerian politics, with analysts predicting a shift in the balance of power in the North Central region.

The move has also sparked celebrations among APC supporters, who see it as a significant victory for the party. As one supporter put it, "This is a new dawn for Plateau State. With Governor Mutfwang on board, we are confident that the state will experience unprecedented development and progress."

As the APC continues to consolidate its hold on power, all eyes are on Plateau State, where Governor Mutfwang's leadership is expected to play a crucial role in shaping the party's fortunes in the region.
