APC Power Play: Governor Mutfwang's Defection Could be a Game-Changer"
By Justin Jattim
A group of Concerned Plateau APC Legacy Members has expressed strong support for Governor Caleb Mutfwang's potential defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC), condemning protests against the move as "ill-advised" and "counterproductive." The group argues that the protests go against the party's principles of inclusivity and growth, and are likely driven by personal interests rather than a genuine concern for the party's well-being.
In a press conference at the NUJ conference hall, the group emphasized that welcoming defectors is a key strategy for the APC to win elections and control government. They cited the party's grand receptions for defectors in Jos and Lokoja as examples of the party's commitment to growth and development. "We are perplexed that the same party that spent hundreds of millions of Naira to organize grand receptions for defectors will sit back and allow its supposed members to organize protests to block a sitting governor from joining the party," the group said.
The group believes Governor Mutfwang's defection would be a significant gain for the APC, given his influence and control over Plateau State's structure and constituencies. They argue that his presence would bring new support and enthusiasm, especially in Plateau State, and would be a major boost to the party's Renewed Hope agenda. "Governor Mutfwang's alleged defection to the APC would be the biggest catch the party would have recorded in Plateau State since its formation in 2013," the group said.
The Concerned Plateau APC Legacy Members are urging the party leadership to sanction those behind the protests, claiming they are motivated by personal interests and are not genuine APC members. They argue that the protesters are likely benefiting from the status quo and fear that Mutfwang's defection would render them politically inconsequential. "Those trying to stand in the way of Governor Mutfwang joining the APC are probably people who benefit from the status quo and fear that any alterations would render them politically inconsequential," the group said.
The group also appeals to Governor Mutfwang to join the APC, citing the party's Renewed Hope agenda aligns with his vision for Plateau State. They believe his presence would bring about a new wave of development and progress in the state. "We appeal to Governor Mutfwang to join the APC and take advantage of the party's Renewed Hope agenda," the group said. "We are confident that his presence in the party would bring about a new wave of development and progress in Plateau State."
The North-Central APC Forum has also thrown its weight behind Mutfwang's potential defection, saying it would strengthen the party in Plateau State and boost its chances in future elections. They accuse some Plateau APC leaders of opposing Mutfwang's defection due to personal ambitions and claim those leaders failed to deliver their polling units in the last election.
