The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa has said the Nigeria Military has lost a mentor and a role model in person of Lieutenant General Jeremiah Useni (rtd), who has impacted many generations during his life time.
Speaking at a service of songs in honour of Late Lieutenant General Jeremiah Useni (rtd), held on Thursday 20th February, 2025 at the Headquarters of the Church of Christ in Nations, (COCIN) Compound Church in Jos, the Plateau State capital, the Chief of Defence Staff described the late Useni as a dedicated statesman.
“Jeremiah Useni was not just a military officer, he was a symbol of excellence, discipline and service to our beloved nation. His life was a testament of loyalty, courage and selflessness.” Said the CDS.
While underscoring the role of the late Useni in the military, Gen. Musa said as a military officer, he played a pivotal role in shaping the Nigeria military especially during challenging times.
“Beyond his military and political achievements, late Gen. Useni was a man of deep faith and integrity. He was a devoted Christian who lived by the principles of love, humility and service to humanity.”
The CDS urged the family of the deceased to take solace in the fact that he lived a live of purpose and impact, where his legacies will continue to inspires generations to come.
He also admonished the congregation not to mourn his passing away, but celebrate his remarkable achievements in life and honour his memory by upholding the values he stood for, especially values of service, integrity and love for the nation.
Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State who was represented at the event by Chairman of the Funeral Service Committee and Secretary to the Government of State, SGS, Architect Samuel Jatau said the state will forever miss the ever smiling General.
He described the deceased as a very easy going person, generous and helpful but reminded the congregation with the scripture that says there is time for everything. Mutfwang said though the departure is painful, the state must accept the reality, as he assured the family that the state government will support them always.
President of the Church of Christ in Nations, COCIN, Rev. Dr. Amos Mohzo who spoke on behalf of the Church, encouraged the family with a text in Psalms 34: 18, and said God will comfort them.
The Church leader described late Lieutenant General Useni as a distinguished statesman, a man with exceptional generosity, a devoted promoter of the gospel and a steadfast pillar of the church.
Rev. Dr. Mohzo affirmed that the deceased was a member of COCIN throughout his life and as a result of his commitment and love for the church, COCIN has churches that were planted because of his intervention.
The Church appreciated God for his contributions to the church and the countless lives he touched.
In a sermon, former General Secretary of the Church of Christ in Nations, COCIN, Rev. Seth Nden (rtd), read 2 Corinthians 5:1-5, said human beings are not meant to last forever, hence the need for everyone to first think of his salvation.
He encouraged the congregation to amend their ways and prioritize heavenly things and personal relationship with Jesus Christ who according to him is the sure way to eternal rest.
Air Vice Marshall Napoleon Bali appreciated the Plateau State Government, the Church, Nigeria Army, traditional council of chiefs, former Plateau State Governors, the Taroh nation and all the deceased political associates as well as all Nigerians for standing by the family in their moment of grief.
The deceased will be laid to rest in his home town in Langtang North Local Government Area of the State on Saturday 22nd February, 2025 after funeral service at COCIN Central Church Langtang.
